Triangle Foundation to Open Office in Western Michigan

DETROIT – Michigan’s largest GLBT anti-violence and advocacy organization is about to get bigger. The Triangle Foundation will expand its organizing, education and coalition building efforts to western Michigan with the opening of a Western Michigan Field Office in the Spring of 2007. The expansion is supported by a new grant from the Kalamazoo, Michigan-based Arcus Foundation. (more)

State Board of Education Moves to Stop Bullying
June 14, 2006
(Lansing, MI) The Michigan State Board of Education made a bold move in calling for stronger legal tools to curb bullying in Michigan’s public schools. The State’s top public education officials called for stronger measures to end bullying in schools, specifically urging the legislature to pass legislation that would mandate that all public school districts in Michigan have an anti-bullying policy that models the state recommended policy. The vote was unanimous and bi-partisan. (more)

Hate-Speech Vandalism Found Across Michigan Technological University’s Campus

Keweenaw Pride, the Michigan Technological University GLBTA organization, discovered threatening hate-speech chalkings all over campus, in response to those advertising “Pride Week.” While some of the MTU community feels that the Administration has been performing satisfactorily, the majority of the university community is outraged and feels that the way the administration has responded is deplorable. Summer Camp for Gay and Transgender Youth Announced
May 2, 2006
(Detroit, MI) – Triangle Foundation has announced plans for a summer camp for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) and allied youth in grades 8-12. The camp, titled Camping.OUT, will take place August 6-11, 2006 and provide a safe place for GLBT youth to participate in the usual camp activities and have an opportunity to learn how to become community leaders. While the camp's primary focus will be the types of fun activities often associated with a youth summer camp, campers will also have the opportunity to participate in group discussions, workshops and activities designed to improve their skills as community leaders. Ushering in spring with song, “Unity through Harmony” continues a season showcasing talent in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied communities when it debuts on Wednesday, April 5 at 1515 Broadway. Featuring the talents of Liz Larin, Barbara Payton, Tatiana, Lazy Sunday and Reinvented, the show’s proceeds will benefit Motor City Pride, an annual street festival produced by  Triangle Foundation in downtown Ferndale. Hate violence and attacks against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people continue to pose a significant and daunting threat across the nation and in Michigan, even as crime rates in general decline, according to the annual report of anti-GLBT violence released today by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) and Triangle Foundation. (DETROIT)--- Statement by Jeffrey Montgomery, Executive Director of Triangle Foundation, in reaction to Proposal 2 in Michigan, the anti-marriage Constitutional Amendment: We may have lost the popular vote today, but we have clearly won on the issue of fairness and equality. Civil rights and expansion of protection almost never come through ballots and campaigns.

And while the reality for gays and lesbians is no different today than it was yesterday ---same-sex marriages were illegal then and they still are--- the infamy attached to that prohibition now as an amendment to our Constitution disgraces that document and humiliates our State. (more)

DEPT. of CIVIL RIGHTS APPOINTS GLBT LIAISON
Triangle Foundation and Department of Civil Rights reinforce strong relationship

(Detroit) – Triangle Foundation recently met with the new Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to discuss the issues that challenge the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community. The Director, Linda Parker, reiterated her support for GLBT civil rights and has appointed W. Ann Warner, liaison to the GLBT community.  The meeting demonstrated renewed dedication and partnership between the agency and the GLBT community. (more)

PISTOL PACKING MICHIGAN BISHOP SAYS GAYS SHOULD BE KILLED  
Trainer of Chaplains violates his organizational rules on “tolerance” and “professionalism”
August 26, 2004
(Pontiac) – A leading trainer of chaplains told a group of students last week that he cannot “tolerate homosexuality” and that homosexuals “should be killed.”  David C. Vorce is President and CEO of the International Fellowship of Chaplains (IFOC), and a retired Marine and police officer.He is also currently a Bishop within his church. IFOC trains people to serve as chaplains in various institutions and settings. At a training seminar in Pontiac, Michigan, last week Reverend Mark Bidwell, Senior Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit was one of Vorce’s students. Bidwell is gay and MCC Churches serve mostly gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members. (more)

Anti-Obscenity Group Swears at Gay Leader
American Family Association Uses “F” Word To Describe Michigan Gay Activist

(Detroit) – The nation’s most visible anti-obscenity organization uses internal foul language to describe Michigan’s most visible gay activist. The American Family Association (AFA) is most known for its anti-gay activism and opposition to “indecency”. AFA has called for boycotts on nearly every popular television program over the past twenty years, sometimes for no other reason than the fact that lead characters live together without being married. (Detroit) –  For the first time in history, an openly gay person has become a Judge in the State of Michigan. Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today appointed Rudy Serra, the most recognized openly gay attorney in Michigan, to the Wayne County Probate Court. (more)
