Discrimination Against Our Service Members:
"A soldier fighting in Iraq was seriously injured in combat. The United States military flew her back to the United States for rehabilitation. Because the rehabilitation would be both physically and emotionally taxing, the military stated that they would pay for a family member to fly to the facility and house them during the rehabilitation. The soldier’s partner took a leave from work and prepared to travel. The military, however, refused to provide the services they promised because the soldier’s family member was her lesbian partner."
Currently, there is a ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the U.S. military. This has been the most famous example of anti-gay and lesbian discrimination that still exists by official policy. Even though other nations allow their gay and lesbian military personnel serve openly, the U.S. has refused to repeal its incredibly expensive and bigoted policy. The U.S. military wastes millions of dollars on recruitment and training for staff that they later investigate and eject from the military. Several Pentagon studies have surfaced that show that the existing ban should be lifted and that the reasons used for banning gay and lesbian service members are weak or flawed.
The current “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy encourages deception and has sparked an increase in witch-hunts against gay and lesbian service members.
Service Members Legal Defense Network is a great resource for more information on this topic.
