Allies When LGBT people acknowledge their sexual orientation or gender identity to themselves or another, it is known as "coming out." Coming out also applies to our straight allies as they acknowledge that they know and support a LGBT person and then take the next step by coming out about it to others. Some make a conscious decision to come out to others, and some experience a defining moment that spurs them to speak out. Allies are advocates for change to occur, they have the ability to speak on behalf of two communities. With the love and respect that they have for their LGBT friends and family, allies can express the greater issues of LGBT injustice and make change from within the system as caring individuals who want a more equal Michigan.
