Iowa Gets It!

Same Gender Marriage in the Midwest!! Iowa Supreme Court Rules Favorably!!
The Triangle Foundation applauds the decision of the Iowa Supreme Court stating that excluding same–sex couples from civil marriage is unconstitutional.  The Iowa Supreme Court is the fourth state high court to rule in this manner after Massachusetts, California, and Connecticut.  This is historic!!  The state of Iowa fulfills the promise of its Constitution to provide liberty and equality to all its citizens.

What does this mean? The final legal analysis is not yet in, but at the Triangle Foundation,

It means IOWA GETS IT!!

Iowa gets that marriage is important to all couple because it provides several benefits not given to unmarried couples including: status as next-of-kin for hospital visits and medical decisions where one partner is too ill to be competent; joint insurance policies for home, auto and health; immigration and residency for partners from other countries; inheritance automatically in the absence of a will;  and inheritance of jointly-owned real and personal property through the right of survivorship.  The list of benefits gained through marriage is huge.

This monumental decision also means that we are getting closer to equal rights all across this country.  In Iowa, it took individual persons in the community to stand up and say “I will not settle for second class citizenship.” The plaintiffs believed they were taking a step for their families and the entire community.  It began with one couple but sprouted to include not just one but several community organizations, attorneys, allies, and neighbors who collaborated to make this a reality.  It took the effort of everyone to get this historical decision after a four year legal battle.

As we get closer, it gets more difficult.  You are witnessing pushback in California and Michigan.  The opposition can see the inevitable and attempting to deter us from full citizenship.  Can you see it?  Will you help us gain ground?

In Iowa, equality was achieved because of dedicated, disciplined, passionate collaborations.  We can make the same energy and action occur in Michigan.  It is achievable.  It is real.  At Triangle Foundation, it is our mission to make it a reality.

Please contribute to our struggle for equality here in Michigan.  You can come out, Join Triangle, attend a public hearing, support allies, and of course give financially.

Iowa predicted a presidency for Barack Obama.  I feel it is a predictor of marriage equality across the nation, especially in the midwest and in Michigan.  Join Triangle Foundation today to bring Marriage and Equality to Michigan.
