What's in it for you?
As an intern, you will be an integral part of Michigan’s largest, most dynamic GLBT advocacy organization. You won’t just be getting coffee or doing filing – Triangle Foundation interns work with the media, lobby elected officials, and work in victim assistance and advocacy, opposition research, and other essential tasks. While you help us help our community you’ll be learning real-world tasks that will help you in your eventual career. In addition, our interns participate in staff meetings where their voices are heard and their opinions valued.
Your responsibilities
The educational institution sponsoring the student should be responsible for setting the number of credits for the internship and whether or not the intern may receive monetary compensation for their work. Each intern will have a supervisor who will be responsible for providing evaluations for each intern and project.
Interns’ educational institutions are responsible for setting the number of credits for the internship and determining whether or not the interns may be paid for their work. Each intern has a supervisor who is responsible for evaluating their work.
Interns are expected to meet their institutions’ academic requirements. Due to the sensitive nature of much of our work, interns may be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Interns coming from out of town are responsible for their own housing, living expenses, and other costs.
Look what former interns have said about Triangle Foundation…
“I was initially hesitant to intern with the Triangle Foundation. I hadn't had much experience with the LGBT community and was unsure if I would fit in. This fear was misplaced. Not only was I welcomed into the community, I was allowed access to a wide and varied range of activities. From media interaction to policy writing and analysis to interaction with other LGBT organizations, Triangle made a point to involve me in the real work of social movement. This internship was more than a notch on my résumé; it was an opportunity to grow in a unique and powerful way. I am different, better, for the experience.”
- Nicholas Lynch
Political Economy, Michigan State University
“As an intern at the Triangle Foundation, I was exposed to the inner workings of a successful activist organization as well as witness the political, social and cultural issues as they expand and evolve in the LGBT community. My internship at the Triangle Foundation gave me a first hand experience with both the rewards and complexities of the work of an important organization fighting for political and social equality.”
- Lara Zador
Social Work, University of Michigan
“My experience at Triangle was inspiring and empowering. I was challenged to think strategically about social change and gain practical skills in areas such as media, policy research, legislative advocacy, and community organizing. Most importantly, through the mentorship of the staff and board, I made connections that I will carry with me for life.”
- Kirstin Leiby
Social Work, University of Michigan
“I think it was working with the staff and board that really made it wonderful for me. They're all incredibly talented people and it was obvious in conversations that they really knew what they were talking about. It was also great how they treated interns as equals and really respected not only what we had to say but what we had to offer. I always felt like I was helping to make a difference and I never felt like I was doing "grunt work". I must also add that I was continuously impressed with the vast amount and variety of things that were being done in that office.”
- Greg Varnum
Political Science/Marketing, Eastern Michigan University
Currently working at Triangle Foundation as the Executive Assistant
“I loved my internship at Triangle Foundation. As a policy intern, I was able to work on issues that I cared about while gaining relevant experience working in a very active nonprofit. It was great to have an internship where they trusted you to work on meaningful projects and wanted you to get the most out of the experience. I also was able to get political science credit at U of M, which was a big plus.”
- Ken Nadolski
Political Science/History, University of Michigan
“My internship experience at Triangle was amazing. I always felt as though the work I was doing was valued and contributing to Triangle’s mission. Working at Triangle gave me experience in many different areas, from lobbying and policy analysis to event planning and networking. But above all, I was always surprised by how much I learned from informal conversations with Triangle staff, volunteers, and Board members, and from just being in the office. My internship at Triangle gave me the practical experience, skills, and knowledge that will no doubt be invaluable to me upon entering the non-profit sector.”
- Ciara Relyea
Social Work, University of Michigan
"Triangle Foundation proved to be a life-changing experience. They provided a solid experience in community organizing and exposed me to an array of macro interventions. The cohesion within the organization provided an atmosphere that embraced contributions, supported differences, and challenged each other. There is no place I would rather have been."
-Melissa McDaniel
